LANGUAGE

We began this period by writing our spelling test. We then switched gears and continued to work on our speeches and poems. The Grade 3’s are close to having them memorized…well done!! They are encouraged to begin to read with tone and expression.

MATH

We are beginning to wrap up our multiplication and division unit. Today the students completed ‘Show What You Know’ in their textbooks. It was a review of what was covered in this unit. Reminder – there will be a multiplication and division unit test on Monday February 2! I have sent home a review sheet with what will be on the test! Please put it to good use.

LANGUAGE

We spent this time going over our sentence package. While I was marking it I noticed quite a few errors so I thought we should look over it as a class. We also used some of this time to write our speech and practice our poems. We have read and looked at examples of speeches written by others in Grade 4 and 5. We have talked about the importance of a hook to grab the audiences attention and a concluding statement which draws everything together.

This time was used to begin good copy of our menus!

MATH

Reminder - our multiplication and division test will be Monday February 2! I will be handing out a review this week! Today we continued to work with base ten blocks as a strategy to solve our division problems. We used arrays to help as well. The Grade 4's worked with division and remainders.

LANGUAGE

Today was our short Language period which was used to do catch up work and work on speeches. I have read a few of the speeches thus far and am very impressed! We will continue to work on them in class.  Remember we are looking for a 2-3 minute speech on any topic, with teacher approval. We want a "hook" to grab the audience and an introduction. We want a few paragraghs with detail sentences. Finally we are looking for a concluding statement which sums everything up! We will be using devices to research for our speech.

U.O.I.

We used this class to work on our menus. I am a little disturbed by how some people choose to use class time so part of the homework tonight is to have the rough copy finished. I have also cut back on the number of items...there now needs to be 2 appetizers, 3 lunch items, 4 dinner items, 6 drinks, 3 sides, 3 kids items, and 1 dessert. PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE A DESCRIPTION BESIDE EACH FOOD ITEM. PLEASE CHECK OVER YOUR CHILDS MENU FOR THIS DESCRIPTION AND SPEELING!!! THANK YOU!

Have a great night!!

MATH

We continued talking division. We continued working with arrays and looking at how multiplication and division are related. It seems as most are getting the hang of division!!

***Unit 4 Test (multiplication and division) will be Monday February 2. If someone is away they will make up the test when they are back at school!!!

Language

Today we worked on spelling lesson 10. The words were written in their agendas and then the students worked on the activates to go along with the lesson. We began talking about our speeches and poems. The grade 3’s will bring their poem home on a nightly basis to read and memorize. Grade 4’s have chosen a topic and began with brainstorming. Devices will be used on a regular basis to help research their speech topic. I am hoping to allow roughly half an hour per day to work on speeches.

I have given each student a letter, schedule, and rubric to take home so you can take a look at it. Please sign the letter and bring it back tomorrow.

U.O.I

Today we began talking about our final project, which is making a restaurant menu. This should be a fun project for all!! We will be working on it all week in class and the final project, if not complete by end of day Friday, will be due Monday February 2.

I have sent directions and a rubric home as well. Please have a look at it. It does not have to be signed! It is just an overview! I am looking for a colourful menu with a catchy name and pictures. I would like 4 appetizers, 5 lunch items, 6 dinner items, 6 drinks, 3 desserts, 3 kids meals, 6 sides. I also need a description and dollar amount for each item.

Have a wonderful evening!

Mrs. Hocevar :)
