Welcome to grade 4!

I hope you all had a wonderful summer! Ours was filled with trips up north, swimming, trips to cottages, boating, movies, and amusement parks! Here are a few pictures!

A few important reminders:

Orientation Night will take place on Tuesday, August 30 from 6-8 PM. We will all meet in the auditorium where Mrs. Nelson will do introductions and go over some policies. After that you will have a chance to pop by the classroom where I can answer any questions you may have.

First day of school is Wednesday, September 7. Pizza lunch will be served at $2/slice during the first week of school. The hot lunch program will begin Monday, September 12 with forms and payments due Friday, September 9 (no exceptions)

Welcome Back BBQ will take place on Thursday, September 15 from 4-7 PM. This is a great chance for staff, students, and parents to interact and get to know one another. Forms and payments are due by Friday, September 9 (no exceptions).

Our first Unit of Inquiry is called O'Canada. We will be filling our UOI board with post cards from different provinces and territories in Canada. Students are encouraged to ask friends and/or family that live in another province or territory to send them a post card to add to our UOI board.

A little bit about grade 4:

Homework will be given on a daily basis and students are expected to read at least 30 minutes per day. Students are also expected to write in cursive. As per the email sent out on Thursday, one of the biggest changes is the uniform. Alpa, our uniform specialist, will be more that happy to help with you anything related to uniform. She can be reached via email at alpa@multiformcanada.com.  The first few days will be spent getting to know one another, completing DRA’s, creating our IB learner profile traits pictures, and reviewing the policies/procedures of SJA. This year we are running on a 10-day cycle, so our schedule will be changing on a daily basis. We have gym and French every day, with music taking place every second day. Spelling activities will be done every Monday, or Tuesday if there is a holiday, with a spelling test taking place every Friday, or Thursday if there is a holiday. After every math unit there will be a unit test. I will send home a review for students. After every UOI unit, students will have to complete a summative assessment. This will be done during class time. I will do my best to send home monthly email reminders of important dates and information. My blog will be updated on a daily basis, as will student agendas. Please take the time each night to sign your child’s agenda.

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday! If you have any questions please feel free to email me. Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Grade 4!

I hope everyone enjoyed their summer vacation. Our family most certainly did! Please review the notes below, as per the email sent out by Mrs. Nelson. I look forward to seeing you on August 30 and if not then, I will see you on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 7!

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Orientation Night
This year we have divided our Orientation Nights into three different sessions:
August 29th at 6pm- JK/SK
August 30th at 6pm- Grade 1 - 6
August 31st at 6pm: Grade 7 - 12

All three sessions will take place in the school auditorium.

School Uniforms
A gentle reminder to parents that the changes to our school uniform have now fully taken place.  Primary students (JK - grade 3) will no longer be able to wear the white, Oxford style,  button-up shirt or the belted tunic.  These uniform pieces have been phased out over the last two years, and will no longer be acceptable.  Primary student must be dressed in either the short sleeved polo shirt (spring/summer) or the long sleeve polo shirt (fall/winter).  Appointment can be made with Alpa during the summer months to purchase your child's school uniform.              alpa@multiformcanada.com

After-school Programs
St. Jude's Academy has a range of specialized after-school programs to suit the interests of any child!  From karate, to computer programing, dance,  to piano- we have your child covered!  Please keep an eye out for after-school program registration forms in the coming weeks.  SJA also offers our traditional after-school program from 3:45 - 6pm daily.

Secured-Access Entry Point
Starting in September, SJA will have a new secured-access entry door that will be the only entry point to the school during before and after care.  This door will only be able to be accessed with a specialized key.  Keys will be provided to all parents during Orientation week (deposit required).  Please keep your eye out for more information on our new secured-access entry point.

Teacher Assignment
SJA is putting the finishing touches on our class lists for this school year.  All families will receive a welcome email from their child(ren)'s classroom teacher before Orientation Night.  This email will provide you with the contact information for your child's teacher, as well as other important information for the first week of school.  Grade 7 - 12 students will receive their class schedules on Orientation Night.

Hot Lunch Program
SJA has a wonderful hot lunch program that is available to all students.  The hot lunch order form for the month of September is attached to this email.  Families have the option of pre-ordering hot lunches for their child(ren) for the month of September by completing this form and delivering the completed form and payment to the school either in person, by mail, or dropping off during Orientation Night.  Due date for September lunch forms and payment is September 9th.  Please be sure your child's name is recorded on the form.
School Improvements
SJA has had crews in working over the summer months to make some exciting improvements to our facility.  Please make sure you check out our new gymnasium flooring and our fully renovated science lab!  The students will be to sure to enjoy these new additions.
