Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful night! We had a great today. We began with our monthly award ceremony and played a house game inspired by Mrs. Patrawala, who will be doing the yoga after school program. Students were able to practice their downward dog and crab walk! The grade 4’s worked very hard to day and were very focused. Great job!

Please remember to sign your child’s agenda every night.

Just a friendly reminder that fall/winter uniforms begin on Tuesday, October 11th. This means that grade 4’s must wear their blazers and ties everyday, along with their long sleeved button-up shirt. House ties are also mandatory on Fridays.

Parent Guild is holding their meet and greet/general meeting tonight, Friday, September 30 from 4:00-5:30 PM. The meeting will be held in the SJA Auditorium. This is a great time to meet your Parent Guild and hear about all the exciting events coming to SJA. * Free childcare will be offered to those parents who attend!*

Important information and reminders:

We are still collecting Terry Fox money, so if there are any outstanding pledges please send them in!

The Parent Guild is hosting a movie night and dance on Friday, October, 21.  The movie (The Wild Life – PG) will run from 6:30-8:30 and the dance from 8:30-9:30. All of this will be taking place in the SJA auditorium. Free child care will run from 6-6:30. Tickets are $10 and includes popcorn, a bottle of water and a treat. Students may bring a pillow, sleeping bag or blanket and can come in their PJ’s!! Order forms were sent home tonight and are due back no later than October 13.

As per the email sent out earlier today, the staff at St. Jude’s is conducting a self-study. The self-study is a requirement of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The self-study is taking place now as it is almost 4 years since our IB evaluation visit. The purpose of the self-study is to ensure that we are maintaining the IB programme standards and practices. We are asking that parents and guardians with students in JK to grade 6 take the time to complete a small survey by Friday, October 21. Your input will form part of the self-study report that is submitted to the IBO and will help direct further action that needs to be taken by staff at our school. The survey link has been posted below! We thank you in advance for your participation!

LANGUAGE:

Today we had our lesson 3 spelling test. We also began working on our report writing in preparation for our OWA. We will continue to work on our reports for a few days.

UOI:

Today we examined renewable and non-renewable resources. We reviewed our anchor chart from the other day and provided examples of each. We completed a cut and paste activity to show what we learned.

MATH:
Today we looked at adding 3-digit numbers. Some strategies we can use are base-ten blocks, expanded form, and place value. For most the place value strategy may be the easiest. Again, assistance at home during homework is greatly appreciated.

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful night!

We had so much fun doing our Terry Fox run today. Although the weather did not cooperate and forced us indoors it was great seeing all of the participants. Great job SJA! We are still collecting Terry Fox money!

Parent Guild is holding their meet and greet/general meeting tomorrow, Friday, September 30 from 4:00-5:30 PM. The meeting will be held in the SJA Auditorium. This is a great time to meet your Parent Guild and hear about all the exciting events coming to SJA. Please RSVP by via Whoozin or sjaparentguild@stjudesacademy.com.
* Free childcare will be offered to those parents who attend!*

Important information and reminders:

October lunch forms have been sent home. Please remember to completely fill out both sides of the form, including the totals. We have some new items so be sure to check it out! All forms and money are due back tomorrow, Friday, September 30 with no exceptions!

LANGUAGE:

Today we had Daily 5. Students read to themselves, read to the teacher, worked on spelling works, and writing. We also had time at the end of the day to do a ‘quick write.’ This is when a topic is given to the students and they have to write non-stop for 10 minutes on that topic!

UOI:

Today we did a mini project on natural resources. I picked up some books at my local library and students used the book to research a certain provinces natural resources.

MATH:
Today we looked at estimating sums. An estimate is a reasonable guess of what the answer is. One strategy we used rounding. Remember the rule: 1, 2, 3, 4 round down and 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 round up. Another thing to keep in mind is that if we have a four-digit number and we are asked to round to the nearest hundred we still need to have a four-digit answer. For example if we were asked to round 3671 to the nearest hundred the answer would be 3700. If we were asked to round to the nearest 10 it would be 3670.

1) Round to the nearest 1000
2499 = 2000 & 2765 = 3000
2) Round to the nearest 100
99 = 100 & 521 = 500
3) Round to the nearest 10
33 = 30 & 39 = 40

Again, assistance at home during homework is greatly appreciated.

Have a great night!

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful night!

Our Terry Fox run will be happening on tomorrow around 10:00 AM. Students may come dressed in their gym clothes that day!

Parent Guild is holding their meet and greet/general meeting on Friday, September 30 from 4:00-5:30 PM. The meeting will be held in the SJA Auditorium. This is a great time to meet your Parent Guild and hear about all the exciting events coming to SJA. Please RSVP by Wednesday, September 28 via Whoozin or sjaparentguild@stjudesacademy.com.
* Free childcare will be offered to those parents who attend!*

Important information and reminders:

The bake sale has been extended for tomorrow!

Terry Fox pledge forms have been sent home. Every little bit helps. All forms and money are due back by Thursday, September 29. We have only raised $500 of our $4000 goal so lets go grade 4. Remember that every little bit counts!

October lunch forms have been sent home. Please remember to completely fill out both sides of the form, including the totals. We have some new items so be sure to check it out! All forms and money are due back by Friday, September 30 with no exceptions!

LANGUAGE:

Today we continued to read Anne of Green Gables and answer comprehension questions. We also had reading buddies and made a trip to the library.

UOI:

Today we had an open book fill in the blank quiz on Canada’s Regions. I am handing back the map of Canada quiz. Those are yours to keep!

MATH:

While marking homework, I noticed a lot of friends with rounding errors. I am sending home extra rounding worksheets for those students. Any assistance at home during homework would be appreciated.

2499 = 2000 & 2765 = 3000
2) Round to the nearest 100
99 = 100 & 521 = 500
3) Round to the nearest 10
33 = 30 & 39 = 40

Today we looked at comparing and ordering numbers. We used different strategies to figure out the problems, such as base ten blocks, number lines, greater than/less than/equal to signs, and place value charts. Remember the Packman mouth wants to eat the bigger number. For example 29 > 13 & 88 < 100!

Have a great night!

MATH:

Today we looked at rounding numbers to the nearest 1000, 100 and 10. The rule to remember for rounding is 1, 2, 3, 4 we round down to the ground (round down) and 5, 6, 7 8, 9 up we climb (round up). For example:

1)Round to the nearest 1000
2499 = 2000 & 2765 = 3000
